Residence Permit in Italy

Residence permit in Italy is issued by the Immigration and Border Police Service of Italy according to the place of the applicant’s registration. It allows a non-EU citizen to live in Italy all year around.

A residence permit is issued for one year with an option to extend. After 5 years, you become eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit and afterwards for a citizenship.

Application documents and residence permit requirements

  • Proof of the sufficient income or current funds for living expenses in Italy for a year (minimum €18,000 per applicant)

You may be requested to provide any other documents to prove your reliability. In most cases an interview is expected.

Application process

The entire application process may take 4-7 months.

You need to prepare all the necessary documents in the home country and in Italy.

Then you apply for a national visa (type D) issued by the Italian embassy in your home country. When you arrive in Italy, you apply for a residence permit issued by the Immigration and Border Police Service. From this moment on you are considered to be an Italian legal resident.

If you are traveling with your spouse and children, the application documents are submitted both for you and your dependants.

Within 2-3 months you and your family will receive a residence permit.
