Residence Permit in Austria

If you have a regular and solid income and you want to buy real estate or just to move in Austria, as well as to travel freely across the EU countries, then an Austrian residence permit card is what you need.

Residence permit in Austria is issued by the Federal Ministry of the Interior of Austria according to the place of the applicant’s registration. It allows a non-EU citizen to live in Austria all year around.

A residence permit is issued for one year with an option to extend. After 5 years, you become eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit and afterwards for a citizenship.

Application documents and residence permit requirements

  • Proof of the sufficient income or means of subsistence in Austria (minimum €1765.56 per month for a main applicant, €2647.16 per month for a family of two spouses, €272.42 for each child)
  • Other proofs of your financial liability, for example, stocks, bonds, renting contracts, etc.

You may be requested to provide additional documents to prove your reliability. In most cases an interview is expected.

Aside for the necessary documents, some residence permits can only be issued if there is an available quota place.

Application process

The entire application process may take 2-6 months.

You need to prepare all the necessary documents in the home country and in Austria; you need to secure a quota place.

Then you apply for a national visa issued by the Austrian embassy in your home country. When you arrive in Austria, you apply for a residence permit issued by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. From this moment on you are considered to be an Austrian legal resident.

If you are traveling with your spouse and children, the application documents are submitted both for you and your dependants.

Within 3-5 months you and your family will receive a residence permit.
